Helping homewards journeys during Covid lockdown

Helping homewards journeys during Covid lockdown

During Covid crisis media has mentioned rather frequently that Covid 19 has been a social leveler. In my opinion nothing is further from the truth. This global pandemic affected old people more than the young. Those with financial savings faired better than less fortunate ones. And it was easier for those who had comfortable houses to stay indoors as compared to large families being cramped in small accommodations.

“Lack of food will kill us before Covid does”

every part of our historic City of Delhi has people who have migrated from other states in India. Like any big city, some of the migrants succeed in realising their dreams while others arent as fortunate. Covid has been a social and political crisis like the world has never seen. With onset of lockdowns, many inner city workers feared for the worst. the fear of running out of money, food and shelter. The pictures of mass movement of people to people’s hometowns have circulated across social media.

We at Sakshi, decided to help people get back home. .

Story of Collaboration

Sakshi works with thousands of vulnerable families. A lot of these families were desperate to travel back to their homes across the country. We partnered with Delhi government and helped our beneficiaries in securing reservations on trains. The government was kind enough to allow us to help 60 passengers a day for 2 weeks. I am sharing some of the pictures. Being able to help these people and their families has been one of the most satisfying experience. The relief on their faces of escaping fear of unemployment and meeting their loved ones, is an experience I will cherish through my life.
